Why Fewer Lawn Applications Are Better: A Smarter, Healthier Approach

If you’ve ever compared lawn care services, you’ve probably noticed something: some companies offer 6, 7—even 10—applications a year. It might sound impressive. More must be better, right?

Not necessarily.

At Tim Andrews Horticulturist, we do things differently. Our lawn care program includes just three carefully timed applications per season—and that’s by design. We follow the science, not sales tactics. Specifically, we base our program on the well-researched, environmentally sound recommendations from UW–Madison’s Turfgrass Science Program, which is considered the gold standard in Wisconsin.

Here’s why less is not only enough—it’s often better.

1. Science-Based, Not Sales-Driven

The University of Wisconsin–Madison recommends no more than three to four fertilizer applications per year for cool-season lawns—focusing on timing and nutrient balance, not quantity. Their research shows that with the right inputs at the right time, lawns can thrive without overapplication.

In contrast, many national or regional lawn care companies push frequent, standardized treatments, often with blanket applications of fertilizer, herbicides, and pesticides—whether your lawn needs them or not. That’s not care. That’s a schedule.

We believe your lawn deserves better.

2. Fewer Inputs, Healthier Lawns

Excessive lawn treatments can:

  • Encourage shallow root systems (making grass more vulnerable to drought)
  • Lead to excessive top growth that requires more mowing
  • Disrupt soil biology
  • Increase runoff of fertilizers and chemicals into nearby waterways

Our three-application program is designed to support strong root growth, natural resilience, and environmental stewardship. It’s not just about how green your grass is next week—it’s about building long-term health.

3. Timed for Maximum Impact

Each of our three lawn applications is precisely timed to match your turf’s natural growth cycles:

  • Early Spring (Pre-Emergent + Fertilizer): Supports early green-up and helps prevent crabgrass and early weeds.
  • Early Summer (Fertilizer + Broadleaf Control if needed): Sustains even growth through heat without overfeeding.
  • Late Fall (Winterizer): Builds root strength and prepares your lawn to come back healthy in spring.

By working with the rhythms of the growing season, we can do more with less—maximizing benefits while minimizing input.

4. Fewer Chemicals = Safer for Families, Pets, and Pollinators

Every product we apply is chosen with care. But the truth is, less chemical use is always better—for your soil, your kids and pets, and the broader environment.

More applications mean more exposure. Our limited, targeted approach reduces risk while still delivering the lush, healthy lawn you want.

5. It’s Not Just Lawn Care. It’s Landscape Stewardship.

We don’t just treat lawns—we steward landscapes. That means observing your turf over time, recognizing patterns, and making thoughtful adjustments. Sometimes that includes aeration or overseeding; sometimes it’s addressing soil compaction or organic matter levels.

We’re not in a race to make your lawn green overnight. We’re in it for long-term resilience, rooted in science and grounded in care.

The Bottom Line: Do What Works, Not What Sells

You don’t need a dozen treatments to have a healthy lawn. You need the right treatments, at the right time, applied by professionals who know your soil, your climate, and your goals.

Three applications. Zero waste. All the benefits.

If you’re ready for a more thoughtful, effective approach to lawn care—one that respects your landscape and the land around it—we’d be honored to help.
