Pruning is a combination of art and science. Proper branch spacing maximizes the efficiency of a trees photosynthetic factory. Strong branches are selected to remain and weakly attached or dead ones are removed. Thinning the crown allows wind to pass through the tree reducing the chances of being damaged by storms and high wind events. Wide crotch angles are much stronger than narrow ones with co-dominant stems. Each species of tree has a different form and texture. Good pruning artfully accentuates and compliments this individual character while reducing chances of breakage or future decay. All of this reduces the risk of future tree failure and lengthens the lifespan.
Installation of hardware can correct or strengthen structural flaws in trees. Often we will install cables or bolts to prevent splitting, especially with trees with two or three tops called co-dominant stems. Hardware can be used instead of making large cuts in trees which may lead to future decay and increase the risk of failure.
Sometimes the only prudent answer is to have a tree removed. We have highly trained and experienced personnel to perform tree removals with minimal damage to lawn and landscape. Using special rigging techniques and equipment like our bucket truck and GRCS, tree removal can be done with no damage to nearby structures.
TREE RISK ASSESSMENT
Both Tim and Beau hold the Tree Risk Assessment Qualification through the International Society of Arboriculture. This training can quantify the risk that a tree may pose to human injury or property damage. This analysis can help a tree owner manage the risk on his or her property. One of the tools that might be used is our resistograph. This instrument can help determine the structural integrity of a tree and the risk of failure. This information can help to determine what the proper action should be taken to remediate the risk.
PRESERVATION DURING CONSTRUCTION
There is nothing more heart breaking than building a brand new house based on desirable tree only to lose it within a couple years simply because its roots were destroyed in the construction process. Before any equipment is brought onsite, we will mark off areas to protect the root zone of your desirable tree and offer advice on how to best preserve the health of your tree during construction. It’s much easier and more cost-effective to protect a healthy tree than it is to save a damaged one.
