Why Winter?
Winter offers ideal conditions for many types of tree work. Once trees go dormant in late fall, they’re less vulnerable to stress, and pathogens that typically enter through fresh pruning wounds are inactive or entirely absent.
For oak trees, winter pruning is not just preferable—it’s critical. Oaks are highly susceptible to oak wilt, a devastating fungal disease spread by sap-feeding beetles. These insects are most active in spring and summer, so pruning during that time can inadvertently invite disease. By contrast, pruning in the cold months—typically November through March—greatly reduces the risk of infection.
Elms follow a similar rule. Dutch elm disease, another aggressive pathogen, is also spread by beetles drawn to pruning wounds. To protect your elms, all structural and thinning cuts should be planned for the dormant season.
