Don’t Wait for Winter: Schedule Your Tree Work Now—Especially for Elms and Oaks

In Southern Wisconsin, it’s easy to let tree care fall off your radar as the summer heat rolls in and thoughts turn to backyard BBQs and vacations. But when it comes to essential tree work—especially pruning and removals of oaks and elms—winter is the best time to act, and the time to schedule it is now.

Why Winter?

Winter offers ideal conditions for many types of tree work. Once trees go dormant in late fall, they’re less vulnerable to stress, and pathogens that typically enter through fresh pruning wounds are inactive or entirely absent.

For oak trees, winter pruning is not just preferable—it’s critical. Oaks are highly susceptible to oak wilt, a devastating fungal disease spread by sap-feeding beetles. These insects are most active in spring and summer, so pruning during that time can inadvertently invite disease. By contrast, pruning in the cold months—typically November through March—greatly reduces the risk of infection.

Elms follow a similar rule. Dutch elm disease, another aggressive pathogen, is also spread by beetles drawn to pruning wounds. To protect your elms, all structural and thinning cuts should be planned for the dormant season.

Why Schedule Now?

While the work happens in winter, scheduling starts much sooner. Our winter calendar is already filling up, and we’re prioritizing clients who book their cold-season tree care in advance. Elms and oaks especially require strategic planning, and we want to ensure we have enough time to protect and maintain these valuable trees.

If you wait until fall to call, we may already be booked—or worse, you might miss the safe window altogether and have to postpone important pruning or removal until the following year.

Benefits of Winter Tree Work

  • Reduced disease risk for oaks and elms
  • Less disruption to your landscape
  • Improved tree visibility without leaves, making structural pruning more precise
  • Fewer scheduling conflicts, especially if you’re planning construction or hardscaping next spring
